Houston's Best Lemon Bars

Heather Davis, The Lemon Bar Lady

On a cool January morning I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Houston Style magazine's food writer, Alex Jack.  Our time together was like catching up with a friend.  She is warm, friendly and enjoys a good lemon bar as much as I do.  Please enjoy her essay and feel free to share with me your ideas.

From Alex Jack:  I love food gifts and a few months ago a family friend of ours gave us a pastry gift. The gift was a lemon bar. I was initially intrigued by lemon because lemon is one of those flavors that can be good or bad. I was also intrigued because it wasn't a cake. I took a bite into this lemon bar and I was transformed into bliss. From texture to taste to presentation, this lemon bar was pure perfection. I immediately needed to know who made this. That is the start of my relationship with Chef Heather Davis, owner of Chic Sweets Fine Desserts and curator of the Luscious Lemon Bar!

Heather Davis's journey of being a pastry chef began in the kitchen with her mom baking holiday cookies. Then she took a traditional route of teaching school and would make cookies for her fellow teachers. With the encouragement from those that were blessed by her baking skills, she opened Chic Sweets Fine Desserts in 2011. Chic Sweets Fine Desserts in Houston Galleria and Nordstrom Woodlands, Texas, Rice University, Dandelion Café, and EQ Heights.

I can go on about the luscious Lemon Bars but Chic Sweets Fine Desserts has a mouth-watering menu. I have also fallen in love with the Spinach Artichoke Danish. The Spinach Artichoke Danish is buttery, flaky, and full of so much flavor. From the smell to the taste this Danish is a luxury experience. In addition to that Chic Sweets Fine Desserts has gluten-free brownies, strawberry cream cheese bars, chocolate croissants, and more. When you have a bite of any of the items on the menu you can definitely taste the love.

As this talented chef continues her journey, it is time for her to branch out even more. Chic Sweets Fine Desserts is on the road to expanding into its own kitchen. Currently Heather is looking to move from her shared kitchen to her own kitchen space so that she can grow and do more with Chic Sweets Fine Desserts. I encourage you to support Chef Heather by buying her amazing pastries but support also by donating to her crowdfund to help her make this major move! The goal is $10,000 and Chic Sweets Fine Desserts is almost at $7,000. Let's band together to help her reach her goal.

Chef Heather is one of the black women in culinary that not only has a great product, but her business model is amazing as well. She has grown her business with skill, patience, and love. Each bite of her pastries allows you to get a glimpse of the passion she has for her business. Follow Chic Sweets Fine Desserts on Instagram @chicsweetsfinedesserts and visit mychicsweets.com for more info about donating to her crowdfund and ways you can get your hands on her luscious lemon bars and other fine pastries.

Pu mpkin spice season has officially arrived, and at Chic Sweets Bakery in Northwest Houston, we’re celebrating with one of our most beloved treats—Pumpkin Spice Bars. These bars are soft, flavorful, and topped with sweet cream cheese frosting, making them the perfect way to welcome autumn. Whether you’re cozying up at home or sharing with friends, Pumpkin Spice Bars bring comfort and joy with every bite. The popularity of pumpkin spice has grown tremendously over the years, but our recipe holds true to the homemade flavors Houston families love. With just the right balance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, each bar tastes like a slice of pumpkin pie in handheld form. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the season without waiting for Thanksgiving dinner. At Chic Sweets Bakery, we bake Pumpkin Spice Bars fresh for our 1960/Champions neighbors every fall. They’ve become a tradition for many of our customers, who stop by year after year as soon as they return to the menu. We’re proud to keep that tradition alive, honoring both the flavor of the season and the community that supports us. Pumpkin Spice Bars are also versatile—they make wonderful additions to office gatherings, school events, and weekend brunch tables. If you’re hosting guests, bringing a tray of these bars guarantees you’ll leave with an empty dish and plenty of compliments. They’re easy to serve, easy to share, and impossible to resist. Our bakery loves being part of Houston’s fall celebrations, from football season get-togethers to church functions and neighborhood block parties. Pumpkin Spice Bars are one of those desserts that make everyone smile, no matter the occasion. They capture the warmth of fall in each delicious square. If you’re craving the flavor of autumn, stop by Chic Sweets Bakery in the 1960/Champions area today. Whether you take home a few bars for yourself or a box to share, our Pumpkin Spice Bars are the ultimate fall dessert for Houstonians who love seasonal sweets.

A t Chic Sweets Bakery , we know how much preparation it takes to get kids ready to learn. As a community-rooted business — and a former teacher myself — I understand that back-to-school season can bring both excitement and stress, especially for families facing financial challenges. That’s why we hosted our Annual Back-to-School Drive this month, right here at the bakery. And let me tell you — the love shown by our community? Sweet doesn’t even begin to describe it. 🛍️ What We Collected With your help, we were able to collect: Over 75 backpacks 200+ packs of pencils, crayons, and notebooks Dozens of lunchboxes, glue sticks, and classroom supplies Gift cards for uniforms and shoes Every single item donated went to local students in need — many of them right here in our own neighborhood, in Klein and Aldine ISD schools. 💛 Why It Matters to Us Before I was known as The Lemon Bar Lady, I was “Ms.” in the classroom. I’ve seen firsthand how a student’s confidence can skyrocket when they walk into school feeling prepared and supported. It’s not just about supplies — it’s about dignity, pride, and hope. 🍪 Sweet Incentives for a Good Cause As a little thank-you, we offered a free cookie to every customer who dropped off supplies — and a few surprises for those who went the extra mile. We also created a special "Back-to-School Box" filled with kid-friendly treats and donated 100% of those proceeds to purchasing supplies for local schools. 📸 Community Moments From smiling kids picking out their favorite backpacks to customers dropping off entire bags of supplies, the drive became a beautiful reflection of what our bakery is really about: love in every layer — whether it’s lemon bars or acts of kindness. (You can scroll through some of our favorite moments on our Instagram @ChicSweetsBakery 📷) ✨ Thank You To every customer who donated, shared the word, or simply stopped in to cheer us on — thank you. Your generosity made a real difference. Stay Connected We’ll continue hosting seasonal drives and community events, so be sure to sign up for our email list or follow us on social media to stay in the loop. Giving back is baked into everything we do — and we’re just getting started. Until next time, stay sweet 💛 – The Lemon Bar Lady
